Aedín Gormley spoke to John for Movies And Musicals on RTÉ lyric fm - listen to their conversation above.
In The Goldfinch we meet 13-year-old Theo Decker, who last saw his mother as she was gliding away from him into another gallery of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Seconds later, a terrorist bomb exploded destroying priceless pieces of art… and shattering Theo's life forever. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, friendship and love. The film features Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) as Theo Decker as an adult and Oakes Fegley (Pete’s Dragon) as Young Theo alongside Nicole Kidman, Luke Wilson and Sarah Paulson.

Aedín spoke to director John about the task of bringing this almost 800-page novel to the screen, the casting process, the emotion on screen, his love of directing actors, finding a new musical voice to score the film and why he wouldn't want to direct the new screen adaptation of West Side Story...
