Culture Night 2019 - 10 things to do nationwide

Friday, September 20th brings Culture Night to every corner of the country, with free cultural happenings of every imaginable variety for all ages - and it's all free!

Dublin: Elevate with Aerial Cirque

Look to the skies for a heart-stopping, one-of-a-kind spectacle on the soon-to-be-opened Central Plaza on Dame Street, as metal will meet muscle in Elevate, a breathtakingly beautiful, gravity-defying show created and performed by Ireland's leading aerialists Aerial Cirque, with music by Cork-based composer Peter Power and visuals by Bulgarian artist Petko Panchev. 

Where and when? Central Plaza, Dame Street, 8.45pm, 9.35pm and 10.30pm

Kilkenny: TADA! Theatre - Breathing New Life into Smelly Socks! (Not Literally)

Bring your super-smelly, old, odd socks (the smellier the better) along to Thomastown Community Centre for Culture Night and transform your stinky old sock into a thing of true beauty! After you turn your stinky sock into a fantastic puppet, we will hear all about the character you have made and make up a story or two with these fabulous creations!

Waiting Tables For Godot 

Belfast & Donegal: Waiting Tables For Godot 

In hilarious riff on Samuel Beckett's classic, this site-specific play is set in a run-down café during a never-ending lunch shift. Soup is served in bowler hats as the waiters sing , pray and above all wait for their most important of customers - Monsieur Godot...

Where and when? Costa Coffee, Castle Place, Belfast, 2.30pm and 3.30pm, and The Cafe, An Grianan Theatre, Letterkenny, 7pm and 8pm

Leitrim: Cearlann Scíbhneoireachta Amhráin le Rónán Ó Snodaigh

A songwriting workshop with one of Ireland's finest writers from the acclaimed band Kila. One’s level of Irish is irrelevant - just bring your ideas and your talent will flourish!

Carlow: Carlow Ukulele Players & High Hopes Choir

Carlow's Ukulele Players have been ukeing together since 2017, ranging in age from twenty-somethings to octogenarians. Their uplifting and fun vibe will be joined on the night by the High Hopes Choir, all of whose members have been touched by homelessness in one form or another, as they perform a feel-good repertoire that ranges from the best of Irish ballads to some classic pop and rock music.

Sligo Global Kitchen

Sligo: Sligo Global Kitchen

Winners of the Irish Food Writers' Guild Community Award, Sligo Global Kitchen brings communities together to enjoy a global food experience. Come with friends and family and discover new tastes and flavours at Sligo’s most communal table. 

Where and when? The Mall, Sligo, 5pm - 8pm

Limerick: Pigtown Parade

Be part of Limericks Pig Parade, where you can walk with Limericks butchers and famous brass bands. Be part of the fun and help get Limericks giant piggy to the market. There will be puppets, street performers, and real life piglets. You can make your own mask, or have your face painted...

Meath: Miniature Fairy House Workshop

Come along and make your own fairy house with Maura Fidgeon at Abbeybridge Studio. Get creative and design your own little house and paint it in all your favourite colours. Each person will have their own fairy house to take home...

Kerry: Ceile Afro Dabke

An evening of world music, dance and song kicking off with an excerpt from Catherine Young’s dance work It Takes A Village, followed by a world music ceilí for everyone to join in. Experience the upbeat nature of African dance and drumming, Palestinian Dabke Dance, and traditional Ceilí dances.

Where and when? Presentation Primary School Hall, Tralee, 8pm

Galway: House Party

An outdoor spectacle, a dance opera, where all the wild and raucous activities of a party are performed with movement and gesture to a live classical score.  Set in a three-storey house, boy rushes home to clean the house for girl.  She arrives… and there is an adorable soft moment of blossoming love between them, before the door bursts open and rag-tag ensemble of party animals enter and the night swings gloriously into action.
