Something For The Weekend: Doireann Garrihy's Cultural Picks

Doireann Garrihy is a radio presenter, Snapchat sensation and the star of comedy sketch show The Doireann Project, which premiered to rave reviews earlier this month on RTÉ Player.

Film

Django Unchained. It has everything. One minute, you're wincing at the violence, the next you're swooning over the romance of it all. I think it's one of Tarantino's best... if not Inglourious Basterds. I actually saw both of those movies before I ever saw Pulp Fiction. Where had Quentin been all my life?

Music

At the moment I'm listening to Hozier's album on repeat. It's my way of sending positive vibes in his direction, hopefully coaxing him into releasing new music soon! I realise that sounds creepy, but I just love his stuff so much and hope he has new music on the way.

Theatre

I'm ashamed to say I can't remember the last time I went to the theatre. I studied Drama and Theatre Studies in Trinity so it really is inexcusable, but I work by night! I am on the Zoo Crew on Spin 1038 weeknights from 7-10pm, so it's hard to catch anything that's on. But I am hoping to catch The Snapper at the Gate this Summer for definite.

TV

The Crown. As amazing as Claire Foy is as The Queen, Vanessa Kirby has blown me away as Margaret in season 2 of the show. I'm addicted.

Concert

Dua Lipa in The Olympia this April. Beyonce is my Queen but while she is busy with Blue and the twins (you'd swear I knew her) Dua is filling in just nicely. She oozes coolness and calmness but at the same time is wildly sassy. Need I mention New Rules? What an anthem!

Radio/Podcast

I've just started listening to the Blindboy Podcast (who hasn't?!). I've learned more about world history in one episode than I would have in a year in secondary school. He is one of a kind. In terms of radio, my own show of course! The Zoo Crew on Spin 1038 - weeknights from 7-10pm.

Tech

I just bought a new camera for taking 'proper' photos and downloaded the PlayMemories Mobile app. I'm learning how to send photos from the camera to my phone through the app and feel like my Mom when she first learned to use Facebook. I'm hooked. It is mindblowingly brilliant!

The Next Big Thing

My Dad and his brothers run Doolin2Aran Ferries down in County Clare, doing trips to the Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher cruises. This May, they are launching what will be Ireland's largest and fastest domestic cruise ship. I am so proud of and excited for not only my Dad and his brothers, but the people of Doolin and the surrounding areas. I'll be down there every chance I get!
