Cate Blanchett talks to Myles Dungan - from the RTÉ archives

For the next few weeks, RTÉ Drama On One is going to the archives and giving you the chance to hear some great chats from the Rattlebag programme, presented by Myles Dungan.

21 years ago this month (26th June 1996), Veronica Guerin was shot dead in her car at Newlands Cross, Dublin. News of her death spread all over the world.

In 2002 Australian Cate Blanchett was cast in the title role in Joel Schumacher’s film Veronica Guerin. Blanchett took a break from filming in Dublin and spoke to Myles Dungan for Rattlebag. In a wide ranging and good humoured conversation, which occasionally veered from forthright (about working on Charlotte Gray, The Shipping News, Oscar and Lucinda and her break in Elizabeth) to flinty (not talking about ‘turning down’  Silence of The Lambs and publicising films before they are finished).

On a rainy Tuesday Dalkey morning in 2002, Myles met Cate ...

TRIVIA : Cate Blanchett delivered the eulogy at the funeral of the Australian Labour Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam. Whitlam won the 1974 election before being controversially dismissed by the Governor-General of Australia, Sir John Kerr, at the climax of the 1975 Australian constitutional crisis. Whitlam remains the only Australian prime minister to have his commission terminated in that manner.

In The Wings - classics from the Rattlebag archives, RTÉ Radio One, Sundays at 8pm
