4 Cultural Things to do this weekend

This weekend we've gathered a bunch of really eclectic cultural happenings around the country, from a Prince tribute show, to a feminist film feast - there’s always something to do.

DUBLIN: Live Prince Tribute - The Purty Kitchen, Friday March 31

Sign ‘O’The Times are Ireland’s premier Prince tribute act - with a set comprising a journey through Prince’s back catalogue, fans are in for a vivid celebration of the musical genius that was Prince Rogers Nelson. Musical forecast: Funky, with patches of Purple Rain. Also: the show comes with a two-course supper!

WATERFORD: Harbouring Oceans with Hawk & Barq - Central Arts, Sunday 2nd April

The Kilkenny 5-piece bring their soulful rock stylings to Waterford, supported by the highly touted UK-based indie outfit Hawk, fronted by formidable Galwegian Julie Hawk, and the profoundly groovy Barq (lead singer Jess pictured above). A trio of Next Big Things for a tenner? You really can't go wrong.

DERRY: Showing Off, Void Gallery, until May 20th

In this new exhibition of moving image by women artists and film makers at Derry's essential Void Gallery, female film makers are analyzed through their international diversity, history and achievement. The thematic framework is that of civil rights explored from a feminist perspective, viewed through the lens of current events impacting on movement and immigration issues; this weekend's programme includes a screening of Girl From God’s Country: The History of Women in Film and Other War Stories, a fascinating documentary about the first female independent filmmaker and action-adventure heroine, Nell Shipman.

CORK: Féile Ballydehob, Ballydehob

The tenth annual Ballydehob Traditional Music Festival promises a feast of traditional Irish music, with a programme of events including concerts, session trails, music, song and dance workshops, a singing session, a céilí, sean-nós dancing workshops, street seisiún competitions and recitals. Festival headliners Frankie Gavin & Dé Danann take to the stage on Saturday night.
