Trad Music Thursday: Cúig, Eoin Dillon, Frank Harte & more

With the busy summer season of music festivals and summer schools behind us, we take a look at a number of new album releases and launch concerts taking place over the next few weeks.

First up is the much anticipated duet album by mother and daughter Mary Mac Namara and Sorcha Costello called The Lady’s Cup of Tea. Mary is from the East Clare village of Tulla and learned from masters like P. Joe Hayes and Martin Rochford. Her first album “Traditional Music from East Clare” (Released in 1994) was widely acclaimed and voted by the Irish Times as traditional music album of the year. This recording endeavours to capture the magical empathy that results from a mother/daughter musical bond and is every bit as engaging as her debut. The album was launched this week in Tulla, Clare and will next be showcased at the Return to Camden Town festival in London on 29th October.

A celebration of the work of legendary Irish singer Frank Harte takes place at The Teachers’ Club (36 Parnell Square, Dublin 1) from 23rd September – 25th September. This annual celebration of his work will also feature the launch of a new collection of love songs called When Adam Was In Paradise: Traditional Songs of Love and Courtship. Again, accompaniment and production is provided by Frank’s long-time friend and collaborator, Dónal Lunny. Frank’s daughter Orla compiled the CD which is released with customary detailed sleeve notes, compiled from Frank’s original notes.

For a modern take on the folk tradition, check out The Living Stream who have just released their debut single, entitled Grand Canal Dock, taken from a forthcoming album described by founder Brian Kelly as “an album that oozes modern Ireland”. Their experimental approach to the recording process was free from commercial pressures, giving them a creative freedom that might not otherwise have existed. If you like folk music with a modern outlook, The Living Stream may be just the band for you.

Finally, Northern band Cúig will showcase material from their New Landscapes record at a gig upstairs in Whelan’s, Dublin on Wednesday 28th September. This is their first full length studio album, recorded in late 2015 with sound engineer Sean Óg Graham of Beoga and produced by award winning multi-instrumentalist Jarlath Henderson. Its modern sound and rock-infused accompaniment showcases a young band with a bright outlook.
