Analysis: The A to Z of over 100 electric vehicles on the market in terms of price, range and the EV's ability to provide external electrical power from the battery

The electrification of Irish transport continues with new car sales of the electric powertrains of hybrid electric (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) and battery electric (BEV) vehicles exceeding those of conventional petrol and diesel vehicles.

The competition remains intense from European, US, and Asian manufacturers across all vehicle segments. Models and prices are stable for 2026 compared to last year. The sales plunge of 2024 has been reversed with 2025 sales slightly exceeding the 2023 sales. In new registrations, the electric powertrain sales are dominated by HEVs, then BEVs and then PHEVs.

Sales of used imports are a separate and a large source of vehicles onto Irish roads in 2025. While conventional petrol and diesel vehicles dominate used imports, HEVs and PHEVs feature strongly.
When the sales of new registrations and used imports are combined, the electric powertrain sales are dominated by HEVs, then PHEVs and then BEVs.

From RTÉ Radio 1'a News At One in July 2025, sales of new electric vehicles jump almost 30%

Electric car sales for 2025 in stats

  1. Overall new car sales at about 125,000 in 2025 are up on the 121,000 of 2024 and the 122,000 of 2023.
  2. Conventional petrol and diesel new car sales are down to 42 % in 2025 from 53% in 2024. Electric powertrains make up the other 58% in 2025.
  3. HEV sales are up to about 24% of new cars in 2025. The Toyota Yaris Cross is the top-selling HEV model with Toyota being the top-selling brand.
  4. BEV new car sales are back up to about 19% in 2025 from 14% in 2024. The VW ID.4 is the top-selling BEV model, and VW is the top-selling BEV brand in 2025.
  5. PHEV new car sales are over 15%. The Hyundai Tucson is the top-selling PHEV model, with BMW the top-selling brand.
  6. When used imports of about 70,000 vehicles are additionally considered, the total mix of new registrations and used imports split 50-50 between conventional and electric powertrains, with petrol sales at 31%, diesel at 19 %, HEV at 20%, PHEV at 15% and BEV at 14%. That means about 98,000 new and used imported electric powertrains are on our roads in 2025.

From RTÉ Brainstorm, how do EVs perform in the real world? Here's what one Cork driver discovered

The electric car list for 2026

Electric vehicle options continue to grow for 2026, with over 100 BEV models on the market from over 30 manufacturers. We have researched the BEV options if you are looking to buy in 2026. Many models comes with vehicle, battery, horsepower, drive and range options.

This year, we include two additional vehicle features. First, we note whether the vehicle can be used for towing a trailer, while noting that a BEV towing a trailer can really cut the range. Second, we include whether a vehicle has V2L or vehicle to load. This feature means that the vehicle has a separate 230 V power outlet that can provide electrical power from the car battery if you have a need outdoors or, more critically, if you lose electrical power at home, as has happened in recent storms.

READ: How electric cars can power your home and save you money

As ever, the UK-based EV Database website provides some great data on all models and is used as the reference for much of the information in this guide. Company and industry sources are also used. Battery capacity in kilowatt-hours (kWh) is provided for each vehicle, again from the EV Database website. We present both the useable and the nominal battery capacity values.

The useable battery capacity is always less than the nominal battery capacity. This is important as charging to less than the nominal battery capacity extends the life of the battery. Thus, we also include whether your lithium-ion battery is built with nickel as the main cathode metal, in which case you should only charge to 80 % on a regular basis, or with iron, in which case the manufacturers want you to charge to 100 % on a regular basis. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions when it comes to charging.

The standardised Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) values are published in Ireland for range, and so are used here. We also include in the brackets the real-world range estimate, when fully charged published, by the EV Database website.

From RTÉ News, climate body recommends rise in grants to buy EVs

We are additionally including the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h and the horsepower. We do not recommend testing the acceleration numbers, but fast accelerations and high power set EVs apart from conventional cars.

One other piece of the puzzle is the type of drive. Many of these cars come with rear-wheel drive (RWD): This was once mostly the drive for sports cars. Others are made for off-roading and crazy accelerations and are all-wheel drive (AWD). Others have the traditional front-wheel drive. You can read more on the role drives play in cars in Is a Tesla faster than a Formula One race car?

Each BEV comes with the following information: model, type, price, useable/nominal battery capacity, WLTP range (with the EV Database real-world range estimate in brackets), acceleration time for 0 to 100 km/h, horsepower, type of drive, and the main cathode metal in the battery. The towing and V2L features are noted. Finally, the top selling model for a brand in 2025 is highlighted.

The alphabetical list of cars is a starting reference for BEVs on the market in early 2026. The vehicle type is shown as coupe (c), crossover (x), estate (e), hatchback (h), liftback (l), saloon (s), people carrier (P), utility van (u), sports-utility van (V) or pickup truck (t).

Please note that there may be typos, errors or omissions, and that there will be variations, for example due to delivery charges. Not all models are included in this guide- there are many more models, and not all 2026 prices were available at time of publication. New vehicle launches are fast and furious in the EV world, and so check with the dealers as to prices, new and premium models, range, and variations for 2026 and beyond!

Don't forget to check out the HEV and PHEV options. There are too many for us to present here. Many of these models also have towing and newer PHEVs also feature V2L.
