Report: the guest editor of Vogue was called "uppity", "idiotic", "patronising" and "misguided" for her efforts
It's the latest in a long string of attacks and criticisms which Meghan Markle has received from the British media. Professor Kate Williams from Reading University talked about Markle's treatment on RTÉ Radio One's This Week.
"When other royals do something like this, it's great and seen as reaching out", says Williams. "We'd Kate editing the Huffington Post, Prince Charles doing Country Life and even Queen Victoria had her own travel magazine which was a huge best-seller
"But when Meghan does it, there's an avalanche of criticism. She's called selfish and self-obsessed. It seems to be one rule for her and one rule for others".
Why are certain people so opposed to her? "It's always tough marrying into the royal family but Meghan seems to having it the worst of all", believes Williams. "There's anti-Americanism there, there's sexism there and I think there's a lot of racism there.
"All kinds of words are used about her that are not used about others for example, words like 'outsider' and 'exotic'. When a lady of colour marries into the royal family, a lot of the criticism is race-orientated."
