    Tobacco firms to partly pay for clean-up of butts

    New government legislation which comes into force on Thursday means tobacco companies will now have to pay for part of the clean-up costs resulting from cigarette-related waste.

    Sentencing of businessman put back over health issues

    The sentencing of the retired director of a waste management company, who was convicted over the illegal operation of a landfill site in Co Kildare, has been put back until January after the court heard he was not in good health, with a heart problem that would require remedial work.

    Man jailed for 18 years over attempted murder of gardaí

    A 39-year-old man who shot and injured two gardaí from the upper bedroom of his house has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, with the final two years conditionally suspended.
