    As part of Budget 2026, the Government announced the extension of the Living City Initiative. Athlone joins Sligo, Drogheda, Dundalk and Letterkenny as new regional centres under the initiative, alongside existing centres of Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick and Waterford.
