Luis Enrique has left his post as Spain manager and been replaced by the under-21 national coach Luis De La Fuente.
De La Fuente, who has coached a number of Spain's youth sides in recent years, is set to officially take charge next Monday.
The Spanish Football Federation issued a statement thanking Enrique for his service and expressing its desire to start a new project for the national team.
Spain suffered a disappointing last-16 exit at the World Cup after losing to Morocco on penalties on Tuesday.
The statement read: "The sporting management of the RFEF has handed to the president a report in which it is determined a new project should start for the Spain national team, with the aim of continuing with the growth achieved in recent years thanks to the work of Luis Enrique and his coaches.
"Both the president, Luis Rubiales, and the sports director, Jose Francisco Molina, have transmitted the decision to the coach.
"The RFEF energetically wishes Luis Enrique and his team the best of luck in their future professional projects."
Qatar received just over 765,000 visitors during the first two weeks of the World Cup, according to an organisers' report, falling short of the country's expectations for an influx of 1.2 million during the month-long event.
A huge surge in visitors at this stage is unlikely with only eight teams staying on in Doha, and eight games left out of the 64 in the tournament that began on 20 November.
Organisers had previously identified the peak period for international visitors to be 24-28 November during the busy group stage, when 32 teams were playing four matches every day.
The 7 December report was prepared by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), which organises the tournament, and said that the first 17 days of the World Cup saw 765,859 international visitors, more than half of whom have now departed.
The report registered 1.33 million match ticketholders and 3.09 million tickets sold across the eight stadiums in Qatar for the tournament that ends on 18 December.
A Qatari official, who did not wish to be named, confirmed the figures. The SC did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
