Ireland ratings: Moore and O'Brien best against Spain

Ireland booked their place in the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals thanks to a bonus-point win over Spain.

Scott Bemand's side scored seven tries and were clinical in attack, but there will be concern over their defensive frailties and they conceded five tries.

The result was enough to secure a place in the last eight with Japan falling to a heavy loss to New Zealand in the later Pool C game.

Here's how we rated the players.

15. Stacey Flood – 7

The full-back did plenty right but will be disappointed with some of her play in the back field, fumbling a under little pressure. The good outweighed the bad, however, and she assisted two of the first-half tries and was Ireland's top carrier with 73 metres.

14. Anna McGann – 7.5

Another brace for the Athlone winger, who also crossed twice in the warm-up game against Canada. The first was a straightforward run-in but there was work to do to finish the second and she’s right in the mix to start against New Zealand next weekend.

13. Aoife Dalton – 7.5

Another big shift from the Leinster centre, who made a number of important tackles when Spain threatened and carried hard when asked. The Offaly woman also won an important penalty when there was only seven points between the teams.

12. Eve Higgins 7.5

Always threatened with ball in hand but was marshalled well in general. Kept her head when Ireland looked vulnerable and came up with a big score after Spain had pulled level. Made 11 tackles, most in the backs, and beat three defenders.

11. Amee-Leigh Costigan – 7.5

Scored her second try of the World Cup, finishing off in the same corner as last weekend. Played a huge part in Ireland’s opening try, too, as she pounced on a dangerous Dannah O’Brien kick when the Spanish defence dallied.

10. Dannah O’Brien – 8

Flawless last weekend, O’Brien made up for a poor day off the tee with her general play and well-taken try. Showed great instinct in taking her score, a first international try for the Carlow woman, and landed three conversions. Another strong display of kicking out of hand.

9. Molly Scuffil-McCabe – 7

Kept a high tempo at the breakdown and threatened to snipe a couple of times without breaking free. Assisted two tries with sharp passes and fed O’Brien well. Made an important tackle soon after the first Irish try, which led to a relieving penalty.

1. Ellena Perry – 7.5

Made a big impact on her first Ireland start and was named official player of the match. Completed 20 tackles and made six carries across her hour on field. Scrum was solid.

2. Clíodhna Moloney-MacDonald – 7.5

The hooker, starting in place of Neve Jones, was good out of touch as Ireland returned a 100% rate at lineout, although that covered up some communication issues. Completed 18 tackles and came up with a vital interception to stop a dangerous Spain counter.

3. Linda Djougang – 8

Excellent outing by the tighthead on her 50th international cap. She won a couple of scrum penalties as Ireland established dominance there. Got on the ball when required, making six carries, and racked up 17 tackles.

4. Eimear Corri-Fallon – 7.5

Played a big part in securing set-piece ball for Ireland, taking a team-high five lineouts, and made 16 tackles in a bruising display. Stole a Spanish lineout inside the Irish half and almost got in for a score just before Higgins’ try.

5. Sam Monaghan – 6.5

The captain provided the direct assist for O’Brien’s try and was working hard before suffering an injury from a heavy double tackle a few minutes before being withdrawn in the 23rd minute. Scott Bemand will hope her leg injury is not serious.

6. Fiona Tuite – 7.5

Heavily involved on both sides of the ball and was required for 71 minutes. Credited for four lineout takes. Had seven carries and 20 tackles completed.

7. Claire Boles – 7.5

Busy defensive shift for the flanker as she totalled 22 tackles, the most in green. Was used as a link in the forwards and provided the assist for Grace Moore’s first try.

8. Grace Moore – 8

Really stood up to the task as she replaced Brittany Hogan at the back of the scrum. Her two tries at the start of the second half kept Japan at arm’s length. The first displayed great skill as she beat three defenders in a tight space.

Replacements.

16. Neve Jones (for Moloney-MacDonald 62) – 7

Introduced to see out the game and came up with a turnover.

17. Siobhán McCarthy (Perry 62) - 6.5

Got through her work, making eight tackles in the final quarter.

18. Sadhbh McGrath (Djougang 62) – 7.5

Best of the second-half Irish replacements, constantly making ground with ball in hand.

20. Brittany Hogan (for Monaghan 23) – 7.5

A luxury replacement to bring on, Hogan carried superbly to take a lot of pressure off. Was top-carrier for Ireland with 14 and made 19 tackles.

21. Emily Lane (Scuffil-McCabe 52) - 7

Came on with half an hour to play and assisted Ireland’s last two tries.

22. Enya Breen (O'Brien 62) – 6

Replaced O’Brien at out-half but made a couple of uncharacteristic errors.

23. Nancy McGillivray (for Dalton 62) – 6.5

Was lively and worked hard to make something happen.

Not on long enough to be rated

19. Ruth Campbell (for Tuite 71)
