Cork’s Mary O’Connor and Juliette Murphy were named the Vodafone GAA All Star award winners for Ladies Football and Camogie for 2006.
The players were presented with their specially commissioned trophies at a reception in Dublin’s Westbury Hotel.
It was the second year in succession that Cork dominated these annual awards, Gemma O’Connor and Valerie Mulcahy having been the recipients in 2005 when Cork also won both All-Ireland senior titles.
O’Connor has had a hectic and very successful few years on the GAA fields of Ireland playing with both the Cork Camogie and Ladies’ Football teams and collecting all the major honours available. She was honoured today for her outstanding contribution to Cork’s retention of the All-Ireland Senior Camogie title in 2006.
Off the field Mary has just been appointed the Camogie Association’s new Director of Camogie.
Murphy has enjoyed an equally remarkable two years as the captain of the Cork Ladies Football team. She became the first player from the county to lift a major trophy at senior level when Cork won the National League in 2005 and she has since lifted a second league trophy and the Brendan Martin Cup for the All-Ireland senior championship on two consecutive occasions.
She is now one of the most successful captains in Ladies’ Football history.
