Wicklow's Dan Whelan has signed a reported multi-million dollar contract extension with the Green Bay Packers.
While details of the extension were yet to be confirmed, the Packers have recently extended fellow specialist players Brandon McManus (kicker) and Matt Orzech (snapper) through to the 2027 season and punter Whelan, likewise, can expect some security for the coming years.
The Enniskerry native joined the Packers in 2023 and has since played 34 regular season games and three post-season games.
Entering his third season with the Packers, which starts with the visit of the Detroit Lions this weekend, Whelan has registered two of the top three single-season averages for punting in the Green Bay franchise history. Among players with 100-plus punts, Whelan has also posted the top career punting average (46.2) and the top net punting average (40.0) in team history.
Whelan had been scheduled to make $1,030,000 in base salary in 2025 before becoming a restricted free agent in 2026.
