MVP showdown and Detroit Lions enter play-offs - 5 NFL Storylines

Can the Lions continue to roar during the play-offs?
Can the Lions continue to roar during the play-offs?

It can be argued that for an NFL fan, this is the best weekend of the season.

With two weeks of action left before we discover which teams will make it to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the expectation is palpable in the NFL.

Three in a row?

AFC Divisional round: Houston at Kansas City (Saturday, 9.30pm)

Will anyone stop the Kansas Chiefs' three-peat bid?

No team has ever won the Super Bowl three times in a row. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs hope to not only make history, but cement their place as immortals in the league over the next few weeks.

The Chiefs have had a bye week to relax and get ready for their first challenge of the play-offs - the Houston Texans, who are fresh off a win over the Los Angeles Chargers last weekend at home.

One of the keys to the game for Kansas City will be that of protection and how they handle the Texans pass rushers. Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson will pose a threat on Saturday. Last weekend, they put on a show against Justin Herbert and the Chargers. The big question will be if they are able to do it again, on the road - when the odds are stacked up against them.

Mahomes has played in 18 play-off games so far in his career. At only 29 years of age, there is an possibility he could reach Tom Brady’s appearance record of 48 in the postseason - if the wins keep chalking up for him. He already has the most play-off wins before turning 30.

In those play-off games, Mahomes has 41 passing touchdowns and over 500 yards rushing. He currently holds the franchise record for the most play-off starts (18) and wins (15).

The Chiefs' offence has been strangely ineffective at times this season with notable slow performances - the Las Vegas Raiders home game at the end of November a standout example. That being said, they have been here before. They know what is expected of them.

Do not be surprised if they turn it up a level come Saturday night.

Will the real MVP please stand up

AFC Divisional round: Baltimore at Buffalo (Sunday, 11.30pm)

If you aren’t a morning person, sort Monday morning out now.

The match-up between two MVP candidates in Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen could be one for the ages. Both teams feel like it is their time, with the winner facing Kansas City on the road for a place in the Super Bowl.

Lamar Jackson (R) and the Ravens got the better of Josh Allen's Bills back in September

The Baltimore Ravens's trump card may be running back Derrick Henry. In one half alone last weekend against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he had over 100 rushing yards - showcasing some exceptional speedy plays on the night.

Buffalo has struggled with rush defence this season. They have allowed first downs at an extremely high rate of 43.8%. Only Indianapolis, Atlanta and Carolina have given up more.

After giving up a touchdown early last week at home against the Denver Broncos, the Bills only conceded one third down conversion and 25 rushing from running backs, while holding quarterback Bo Nix to only 82 yards passing.

If the Bills can find a way to limit a high flying Ravens team scoring wise - while ensuring that Allen can storm down the field - they have an advantage.

That being said, this is anyone's game.

Eagles need to find their talons

NFC Divisional round: Los Angeles at Philadelphia (Sunday, 8pm)

The Los Angeles Rams pulled off a considerable result in the Wild Card round, with victory over a Minnesota Vikings team that had 14 wins in a landmark season.

What was even more impressive with the performance was the fact that the team moved its base from Inglewood, California to Glendale, Arizona after the California Wildfires prevented the team from playing at home. Over 52,000 Rams fans travelled to the de facto home game last weekend and the team put on a show.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has been in this position before. In six play-off games with the Rams, he has a total of 15 passing touchdowns and a 5-1 record.

The Rams are getting hot at the right time – but a stout Eagles team awaits in Philadelphia.

Last weekend against Green Bay, the Eagles defence held Jordan Love to just 56 passing yards and had two interceptions in the first half. Philadelphia’s defensive unit was the key to this game, as the offence struggled to gel.

The Eagles need to have more going forward, especially against a Rams team that is in good offensive form, scoring 27 points on Monday night. Consistency is the key - it can be argued that the offensive play calling was too conservative last weekend.

That being said, problems exist for Philadelphia. The Eagles were 2-11 against Green Bay when converting their third-down chances (18.2%).

When a team has offensive weapons like Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and AJ Brown, this is not acceptable.

A Rams win could set up a return for Matthew Stafford to Detroit - this game is intriguing, to say the least.

Either way, history beckons

NFC Divisional round: Washington at Detroit (Sunday, 1am)

Here we go. After all the hype and expectation, Dan Campbell’s Detroit Lions are on the road to the Super Bowl from this weekend.

They welcome a Washington Commanders team to Ford Field who had their first play-off win in 19 years last Sunday. Jayden Daniels has had a phenomenal first season in the capital, last weekend he became the first rookie quarterback to win an away play-off game in 12 years.

Under two weeks ago, Detroit welcomed Minnesota to Ford Field, with the number one pick on the line. Both teams sat at 14 wins entering the matchup.

Minnesota are now done for the year.

Lions head coach Campbell knows that no matter how good his team has been through the season so far, each week provides a different challenge. Lions quarterback Jared Goff has had an exceptional season, recording over 4,000 passing yards and leading his team to 15 wins as a starter.

On Sunday, the Lions start again at 0-0, looking to make history - they have never hosted the NFC Championship game.

A champion will be crowned

Notre Dame are on the charge

The biggest game in college football takes place on Monday night, with the College Football National Championship taking place in Atlanta, Georgia.

Notre Dame will take on Ohio State at the home of the Atlanta Falcons. Notre Dame last won a national championship in 1988, while Ohio State's most recent national championship was in 2014.

Various players from both teams will enter the NFL Draft in April.
