The Washington Nationals have won baseball's World Series for the first time after beating the Houston Astros 6-2 in game seven.

The Nationals took the best-of-seven contest with four wins.

The victory at Minute Maid Park in Houston marked a tense series in which the away team won every game.

The Astros had led from the first inning courtesy of consistent throws from pitcher Zach Greinke.

But everything changed in the seventh when designated hitter Howie Kendrick hit a two-run homer to push the Nationals 3-2 ahead.

It was an unlikely victory - the Nationals started the season 19-31 before rallying for 93 wins and fighting their way through five post-season elimination games to claim the franchise's first title.
