The NFL has named New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady as the MVP for the 2017/2018 season.

Brady, who is chasing a sixth Super Bowl title this weekend, is receiving the award for the third time in his career. He is also the oldest recipient of the award.

His teammate Julian Edelman collected the player of the league honour on Brady's behalf. The wide receiver was sidelined last year with a torn ACL, which kept him out of action for the season.

Accepting the award at a ceremony, Edelman said:

"Tom said he's very honoured and humbled to get this award for MVP. Also, he wanted to thank his teammates, his friends, his family and the Patriots organisation for going out and doing what they do.

"I hope you guys all have a good night and he says thanks."

40-year-old Brady will appear in his eighth Super Bowl on Sunday night, as the Patriots take on the Philadephia Eagles in Super Bowl LII at the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, the home ground of the Minnesota Vikings.

Brady led the league in passing yards, and threw for 32 touchdowns, as well as helping the New England Patriots to secure the number-one seed in the AFC with a 13-3 regular season record.
