Arizona Cardinals edge out St Louis Rams in low-scoring affair

The Arizona Cardinals won a defensive battle and moved a step closer to the play-offs as they edged out the St Louis Rams 12-6 on Thursday night.

Chandler Catanzaro kicked four field goals, the first points St Louis had conceded in three weeks after back-to-back shutouts over Washington and Oakland.

Greg Zuerlein had two field goals in reply for St Louis, with neither team able to get anything going offensively.

But it was not all good news for Arizona, who lost quarterback Drew Stanton to a knee injury when he was sacked in the third quarter, replaced by third-string Ryan Lindley.

Arizona's first-choice quarterback Carson Palmer had also suffered a season-ending knee injury in November.

Stanton completed 12-of-20 passes for 109 yards before departing and there was no immediate word on the seriousness of his injury.

The win lifts the Cardinas to 11-3, tied for first place in the NFC, and they will book a playoff place this weekend if Sunday's game between Dallas and Philadelphia is not a tie, or if Green Bay win and Detroit lose.

The loss eliminated the Rams from playoff contention.
