Born in Louth, McDonald gained his rugby education at Dundalk RFC before moving to Australia at the age of 13.
Having represented Australia at the U20 World Championship in 2019, he spent time at both the Waratahs and Western Force, making ten Super Rugby appearances before joining Ulster in 2022.
McDonald, who was on the Emerging Ireland tour in 2022, spent last season on loan at Connacht where he made 10 appearances.
