Formerly of the Leinster academy, Patterson joined Munster on a short-term loan in early 2021 before making the move permanent later that season when he became a full member of the Munster academy.
Having stepped up to a senior contract the scrum-half was enjoying a blistering season in 2022/23, scoring five tries in 15 games, while he was named Player of the Match in their win against a South African selection in Cork.
A couple of serious knee injuries have stunted his progress, and limited him to just five appearances in 2023/24.
