URC semi-finals: All you need to know

Leinster were 13-5 winners when they hosted Glasgow Warriors last month

We're down to the final four in the URC, and despite a couple of close quarter-finals last weekend, it's the top four seeds who are left standing.

Of this year's semi-finalists, only Glasgow Warriors have had their name on this trophy before, and Franco Smith's side come into this weekend with the longest odds of lifting the trophy.

They face Leinster in the first of this weekend's semi-finals on Saturday afternoon. Leinster, who haven't won this championship in its current form, have fallen at this hurdle each season. A win on Saturday will book them a decider at Croke Park next week.

Over on the other side of the draw it's an all-South African affair, with the second seed Bulls hosting the third seed Sharks, who defeated Munster in last week's epic place-kicking competition.

Here's everything you need to know ahead of this weekend's games.

WEATHER

It looks like we'll have difficult rugby conditions at the Aviva on Saturday, with rain forecast throughout the afternoon, and temperatures around 12C.

A third meeting in eight weeks for these sides, whose two previous clashes this season could hardly have been more different.

Glasgow ran into a red-hot Leinster when they came to the Aviva in April for their Investec Champions Cup quarter-final, and were stuffed 52-0 in a game in which the Scottish side were committed throughout.

Three weeks ago, the Warriors ran Leinster close when they returned to Dublin. On that occasion, Leinster needed a late Ciarán Frawley penalty to make sure of the 13-5 win.

That game was essentially a dead-rubber though, with both sides locked in for home quarter-finals, and the stakes are much higher at the Aviva this weekend, where a place in the final is on the line.

While Leinster have only lost three games in all competitions this season, their Champions Cup semi-final exit to Northampton has heaped the pressure on Leo Cullen's side, and their performances in the wins over Glasgow and Scarlets in recent weeks have been far from convincing.

Leinster were 33-21 winners against the Scarlets in their quarter-final last week

This is the fourth year in a row that the province have made it to a URC semi-final, losing at this stage three years running - twice to the Bulls, either side of a defeat to Munster in 2023.

That run of three semi-final defeats in a row is all the more remarkable given their previous record at this stage. Prior to 2022, they had won 11 of the 12 semi-finals they had played in the previous guises of this competition.

Glasgow produced their best performance of the season in defeating the Stormers 36-18 at Scotstoun last weekend, a badly needed win for the defending champions, who had lost three games in a row to close out the regular season, falling from the second seed down to number four.

Last season, the Warriors also defeated Stormers at home in their quarter-final, going on to win away in Ireland (against Munster) and South Africa (against Bulls) in the final, a route they would have to repeat if they're to retain their title.

History has shown us that the South African sides peak late in the URC season, and the Bulls and Sharks are both living up to that this season.

Jake White's Bulls are the form team in the URC right now as they look to become champions for the first time. The Pretoria outfit have won seven URC games in a row since their Round 12 defeat to the Stormers, with wins against Leinster, Munster and Glasgow during that period.

This is the Sharks' first time reaching the semi-finals of the URC, while the Bulls have been here twice, on both occasions they defeated Leinster in the last four, before going on to lose in the final.

The teams have met on nine occasions since their move to the URC, with the Sharks leading the head to head stakes 5-4.

The Sharks won both games between these sides in the regular season, defeating the Bulls 20-17 in Durban in December, while they won 29-19 in Pretoria in February.

That was one of two home defeats the Bulls have had at Loftus Versfeld in this year's URC, with both coming to South African opposition.
