Munster have no timeline on potential Jack Crowley contract as rumours swirl

Jack Crowley's future has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks

Munster hope to have an update on Jack Crowley's situation at the club soon but wouldn't get drawn on speculation about the Ireland out-half, who has been linked with a move to Leicester Tigers.

Former Munster and Ireland players Ronan O'Gara and Alan Quinlan have both said they believed the possibility that the 25-year-old could depart is real.

Crowley, who lost his Test place to Leinster's Sam Prendergast during the Autumn Nation Series and started just one game in the Six Nations, is out of contract at the end of the season.

Reports suggest that Premiership side Leicester have offered the Cork man, who has 24 Ireland caps, a contract in the region of €700,000 per year as they look to replace South Africa's Handre Pollard, who will leave at the end of the season.

"Yeah, look, no update on Jack yet but it's something from a rugby department point of view, we haven't focused on," Munster skills coach Mossy Lawler told RTÉ Sport on Tuesday afternoon as the team prepares for Saturday's URC derby clash with Connacht in Castlebar.

"Jack has come in this week full of beans like he always is, ready to play and we're just worrying about Jack Crowley the rugby player as opposed to what happens off the pitch."

Asked if there was a timeline for an update that could reassure Munster fans, he added: "Unfortunately not. Hopefully it will be imminent that we get news soon but look, as I say, I know everybody wants to know but we are just focussing on the game ahead.

"Jack will obviously be involved this week so that will be our focal point."

Crowley was among a number of returning international players alongside Conor Murray, Tadhg Beirne, Peter O'Mahony and Calvin Nash, who were rested after the Six Nations.

In addition, Craig Casey, Jean Kleyn, Jack O'Donoghue and Thaakir Abrahams have all returned to full training after injury lay-offs.

Lawler said: "Of course [it's a boost], to get players back like that and have them hopefully available at the end of the week turns ourselves into a different team but it also raises the levels of training.

"Competition is everything so when competition is stepped up we become a far better team."

Munster, in sixth following back-to-back losses against Edinburgh and Glasgow, travel to Mayo GAA's Hastings Insurance MacHale Park to take on 12th-place Connacht, who lost to Ospreys last weekend.

Lawler said he believed the coaching staff got the response they wanted during the 28-25 defeat in Scotstoun on Friday night and looked ahead to a novel meeting with Connacht in the famous GAA venue.

He said: "The biggest thing that we looked for after the Edinburgh game was a reaction and I think we got that in abundance, intensity-wise, physicality-wise, but we still believe we left it behind us.

"If you take the last 15 minutes as a whole we gave away seven penalties to their two and at this level you just can't do that.

"Was there a couple that could have went our way, maybe so but we can't control that, it's just about us being squeaky clean and making sure we are not giving teams access into our 22."

MacHale Park is set to host its first game of rugby on Saturday

He added: "We'll stay in Westport Friday night and we'll get a captain's run in MacHale Park on Friday and we'll be ready to go Saturday.

"[It's] hugely exciting, 25,000 sell-out, it will be something new for both provinces so really exciting weekend ahead.

"We've done our due diligence in relation to what it's going to be and what we're going to face but it's a little bit of an unknown for us all for a rugby match in that stadium.

"We'll just take it as it comes, we'll get to see and feel the place on Friday and hopefully there'll be an unbelievable atmosphere on Saturday."

Winger Andrew Smith, who is on loan from Connacht is not eligible for Saturday's 2.30pm kick-off, while Niall Scannell (shoulder) and Billy Burns (shoulder) will be further assessed during the week.
