Munster not lacking for motivation against Warriors, says Gavin Coombes

Gavin Coombes wasn't involved in the loss to Edinburgh – described by Munster boss Ian Costello as "the worst 40 minutes we played by quite a distance" – but putting that wrong right is just one of the team’s motivations when they take on Glasgow Warriors this evening (7.35pm, live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player).

The next motivating factor is the unbridled rivalry that exists between the last two URC champions.

It's an enmity that has been traced back to a 2013 hammering for Munster in Scotstoun and has carried on across crucial European and URC games.

The most recent meeting saw the Warriors defeat the Irish side in last season’s URC semi-final in Limerick.

They won’t have had many sweeter victories.

Munster are hurting after a 34-28 home loss to Edinburgh in the last round and number 8 Coombes, who didn’t play that day, admits that their history with the defending champions has been spoken about this week.

"It’s always a tight game, and it’s definitely one that both teams don’t want to lose," the 27-year-old told RTÉ Sport.

"There is a huge rivalry, even going back further so it is a big thing and it’s definitely something we’ve spoken about.

"I watched on [against Edinburgh] and formed my own opinion.

"I’ve had chats with lads, and we know we didn’t get things right and didn’t turn up in that half so rectifying that is a huge aspect that we need to get back this week."

Coombes at Ireland training during the Six Nations

Cork man Coombes, who has scored 49 tries in 112 appearances for the province, missed the Edinburgh clash after being called up to the Ireland squad for the Six Nations as cover for Caelan Doris and Jack Conan.

However, both Leinster men were able to recover from injury in time to face France, while Coombes remains on two senior caps, both coming in 2021.

Asked what sort of feedback he received from coaches Simon Easterby and Paul O’Connell, he said he’d prefer to "keep that to myself", while stating he’s working on all aspects of his game.

Back on the home front, Coombes says all of the uncertainty about coaching staff, which came to an end when Munster announced New Zealander Clayton McMillan (below) as their new boss from next season, didn’t distract the squad.

He said: "I think there was a lot made of the situation and people thought it looked like a mess from the outside but we are a tight group of players and have a good coaching staff with us over the last couple of years. Not much had changed.

"For that decision we were told that that would be made by the end of the year and it has been. I don’t think that was on our minds much.

"Everyone is excited [about facing Glasgow], energy levels are up and there’s been an edge in training.

"It’s about having a response to the performance against Edinburgh. I love playing with this club and just being around all the lads.

"I haven’t had a game since Scarlets so I’m buzzing to have a game.

"This is a new block, three huge games away from home. It’s kind of like the run we went on a few seasons ago.

"We are the only people who can control what can happen. There is a huge appetite to get after it."
