Richie Murphy: Ulster have no more room for 'slip-ups'

Sitting three places off the bottom of the BKT URC table, Richie Murphy knows there's no margin for error as they bid to reach the play-offs.

With six rounds to go in the regular season, 15 of the 16 teams can still reach the post-season but Ulster's mid-season slump has seen them slip to 14th and facing a huge task to make the knock-outs.

They bounced back from dispiriting defeats at home to Zebre and away to Benetton with a late victory over Scarlets at the Kingspan Stadium and now need to consolidate that result when they travel to face bottom-place Dragons on Saturday (5.15pm).

"We really don't have any more room for slip-ups, it is really important that we concentrate on the things that make us good as a team," said Murphy, who remains without Ireland forwards Iain Henderson and Cormac Izuchukwu through hamstring and ankle injuries, respectively.

"We have to make sure we turn up at the Dragons with the right attitude and go after the game and really attack it.

"What we learned from Zebre is we have to turn up every week if you are playing in the URC league, it is a difficult league to play in and if you are slightly off you can pay the price.

"Ulster going to the Dragons over the years, I think we have looked back over the last five years, there was one draw and a lot of one-score games, and we all know it is a difficult place to go.

"So again it is about what we can control; we can control how we prepare, how we turn up on the day with the right attitude and implement our game plan on them and if we can do those things hopefully we can come out with the win."

Filo Tiatia's side have just one win to their name in the URC this season, that coming in their round-one victory over Ospreys back in September. They lost 31-21 in Zebre last time out.

"The Dragons' league position shows they are at the bottom but they have been very competitive, especially at home," said Murphy, whose side have won just five league games.

"If we want to keep our hopes up of playing at the business end of the season then we need to win, there's no doubt."

Meanwhile, Murphy, a former Ireland and Leinster assistant coach, paid tribute to scrum-half John Cooney (below), who will depart for French club Brive after eight years at the club at the end of the season.

"I've known John since he was 15 or 16 coming out of school," said Murphy, who led Ireland Under-20s to back-to-back Six Nations Grand Slams before joining Ulster in 2023.

"I've known him for a long time and he has stood up on some really big nights with some incredible performances.

"He'll be missed around the place. It's like when he came in and took over from Ruan Pienaar. It'll be big shoes to fill and now someone else will get that opportunity."

Jude Postlethwaite (hand) and Jake Flannery (knee) are doubts for the trip, while Rob Baloucoune (calf) and Tom Stewart (hamstring) are more likely to become available for the following round.
