Connacht look set to host Munster at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park in Castlebar after the GAA's Central Council approved the proposed fixture.
Pete Wilkins’ side are due to meet Munster on Saturday, 29 March in round 14 of the BKT United Rugby Championship.
RTÉ Sport understands that negotiations between the 2016 Pro12 champions and Mayo GAA are at an advanced stage and that the province hopes to confirm details in the coming weeks.
Speaking last week before the GAA gave the green light, Wilkins said: "Our reaction as coaches and players is one of excitement. It’s a little way off coming together as a plan but the prospect of it is brilliant.
"To go to a historic venue of that size, taking the game to another part of the province is a really good opportunity."
The other three provinces have all held home games at GAA grounds over the last two years.
Meanwhile, Connacht will not appeal the red card received by number 8 Sean Jansen (above) in their 28-14 loss to Bulls on Saturday.
The forward was sent off for a dangerous tackle in the 21st minute of the game at the Dexcom Stadium.
Connacht, eighth in the URC, host Zebre in the Challenge Cup on Saturday (8pm).
