Will Connors among Leinster returnees ahead of Racing clash

Will Connors is set to return to full training

Leinster flanker Will Connors could make his first appearance since October against Racing 92 on Saturday but Johnny Sexton and Tadhg Furlong remain unavailable due to injury.

Connors will return to full training this week after recovering from surgery on a bicep injury suffered during Leinster's win over the Cell C Sharks on 8 October.

Thomas Clarkson, Max Deegan, Joe McCarthy and Luke McGrath are also expected to train fully ahead of the Heineken Champions Cup date with Racing at the Aviva Stadium, live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player.

Deegan, McCarthy and McGrath have all shaken off ankle injuries while prop Clarkson has recovered from an arm complaint.

Flanker Connors has had rotten luck with injuries over the past year. The Ireland international missed seven months with a knee injury in 2022 and although he returned for the season-opening win over Zebre Parma, he suffered another setback in fourth appearance of the campaign against the Sharks.

"He's an incredible man, it’s great to have him back out there," Leinster attack coach Andrew Goodman told RTÉ Sport.

"The boys are all a bit worried about his tackling. He goes in hard the young lad, he fires in at some ankles. All the boys are on high alert around Will at the moment with all the energy he has brought back into training."

Leinster beat Gloucester on Saturday to extend their winning streak to 14 matches

Leinster reported no fresh injury concerns following the 49-14 win over Gloucester, which secured their place in the Champions Cup last 16.

Ireland prop Furlong remains sidelined with an ankle injury sustained in last month’s comeback win against Ulster, while Sexton underwent surgery on an injured cheekbone earlier this month.

Leinster confirmed last week that both players are expected to be available for Ireland’s Six Nations opener away to Wales on 4 February.

There were no further updates on Charlie Ngatai (hamstring), Ed Byrne (knee), Jason Jenkins (hamstring), Robbie Henshaw (wrist), Martin Moloney (knee), Ciarán Frawley (knee), Charlie Ryan (knee) and Tommy O’Brien (knee).

Leinster were 42-10 winners over Racing 92 in round one

Leinster can secure home advantage for the entire knockout stages with victory over Racing, who kept their last-16 hopes alive with a dramatic late win over Harlequins while down to 12 players.

"I enjoyed watching their game on Sunday afternoon, it was entertainment galore, back and forth with a few cards," said Goodman.

"They did incredibly well. They've given themselves a chance. They'll come over here and throw everything at it to try and get through and qualify.

"[Home advantage in the knockouts] is massive. It’s something we’ve talked about. We’ve put ourselves in that position but we can’t expect turning up at the Aviva that it’s going to happen.

"We’ve got to make sure our preparation is the best it’s been all year so we can turn up and put on a good show in front of our home supporters."

Watch Leinster v Racing 92 in the Heineken Champions Cup live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player from 2.30pm on Saturday. Listen to live commentary on RTÉ Radio 1.
