Munster boss Graham Rowntree bemoans 'ill-disciplined' final quarter in Connacht defeat

Graham Rowntree said Munster were architects of their own downfall once again as they crashed to a disappointing loss against Connacht in Galway.

Munster conceded 15 unanswered points in the final 16 minutes as Connacht came from 11-5 down to claim their first victory of the season.

A try from Ireland prop Finlay Bealham and penalty from Conor Fitzgerald put Connacht back in front but Munster failed to respond, with Paul Boyle's late try denying them a losing bonus point.

"We lost our way with our inaccuracy again," Munster head coach Rowntree told RTÉ Sport. "The last 15 minutes in particular were littered with ill-discipline, backing up penalty on penalty. [They] put us in the corner, put us under pressure."

It was a recurring theme for Rowntree, whose side have lost three of their opening four BKT United Rugby Championship matches this season.

"The annoying thing - what’s killing us, is us. Our control of the ball, our accuracy and our discipline," said Rowntree, who lost his captain Peter O’Mahony to a suspected shoulder injury during the second half.

"We went to 11-5 [on 48 minutes] and didn’t push on from there. We had a big opportunity going into their 22 where we lost control of the ball. Next thing we know we’re back in our 22. We have to be better with that ball retention in that area of the field.

"I can’t fault the energy and effort from the lads. We just need to be more accurate."

The Connacht players celebrate Mack Hansen's try

Connacht weren’t at their accurate best either but they still strung some lovely passages together in attack, with their set-piece laying the platform.

Mack Hansen opened the scoring after nine minutes but they failed to build on that early score with captain Jack Carty twice hitting the post from kicks.

Carty also shanked his conversion for Bealham’s try, with Conor Fitzgerald taking over to kick the go-ahead penalty on 62 minutes before they finished with a flourish.

"It wasn’t perfect, we know that, but it was an interpro win," said Connacht director of rugby Andy Friend.

"It was our first game on our new pitch in front of our family, friends and supporters. It’s a great way to start the weekend."

Friend paid tribute to his side’s physicality as they finished strongly to snap their three-game losing streak in style.

"Both teams were nervous because both haven’t clicked at the start of the season for various reasons," said Friend.

"Our forward pack lay the platform for us which got us on the front foot. Going in at 8-5 down at half-time was frustrating, you’re scratching your head thinking, 'how are we behind?’ They got another penalty and it was 11-5 and it was like, here we go again.

"Then we get the try but even right to the death, we’re camped on their line and give away a penalty. Go to the lineout and give away another one.

"Thankfully we managed to get another try ourselves. It's a great way to finish the game and get the season started."

Friend also gave special mention to Bealham, who produced a man-of-the-match performance on the new all-weather surface at the Sportsground.

"He was sensational," said Friend of his tighthead. "He has got huge aspirations and it’s performances like that will get him the recognition he deserves.

"He’s one of the top tightheads in the country, we know that because he’s playing for Ireland at the moment, but you need to put in big performances like that in the interpros.

"He’s done that tonight, not just his scrummaging but his work rate around the field, his carries, his tackles, breakdown work, turnovers, jackals. I’m really pleased for him and proud of him because he work very hard to produce those performances."
