Aryna Sabalenka completed the Sunshine Double for the first time with victory over Coco Gauff to successfully defend her Miami Open title.
Iga Swiatek four years ago was the last player to win the WTA 1000 titles in Indian Wells and Florida back-to-back, and Sabalenka has now emulated her after a 6-2 4-6 6-3 victory against home favourite Gauff.
The world number one also got engaged this month, and she told Sky Sports: "I haven't had a moment to really stop and look back and realise what just happened in the last month but I’m so proud of the work that we’ve done, the fight that I was able to bring on court, the level and everything."
There were again serious question marks over Sabalenka’s mentality in finals after she was beaten by Elena Rybakina at the Australian Open but the resilient Belarusian has answered those in style.
After saving a match point to take revenge against Rybakina in Indian Wells, Sabalenka overcame a mid-match wobble to see off Gauff and take a 7-6 lead in their head-to-head.
The American handed Sabalenka one of her most painful defeats in the French Open final last year, after which the world number one was heavily criticised for her sour grapes response.
Gauff did not hold a grudge, with her focus primarily on overcoming serving difficulties that have dogged her for more than a year.
She was broken twice in the opening set, with Sabalenka’s power proving too much, but Gauff dug in impressively in the second and got her reward when the top seed threw in some unforced errors in the 10th game.
Sabalenka regrouped impressively, though, moving ahead early in the decider and pulling away to claim the title again.
The 27-year-old did lose her cool when a woman in the pro-Gauff crowd screamed out late in the third set, earning a warning for swearing.
"I got a little frustrated at that one moment," added Sabalenka. "Definitely not proud of what I yelled."
