Roger Federer has played his last competitive game of tennis as he teamed up with Rafeal Nadal in a doubles loss against Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock in the Laver Cup last night.

Played in an electric atmosphere at the 02 Arena in London, the 20-time Grand Slam winner couldn't help Europe to a win against their American opposition in this Ryder Cup style format.

The Swiss maestro and his Spanish rival won the first set 6-4 against Team World, 'Fedal' producing some magical moments to finally shake off their younger opposition.

The second set was an even tighter affair with the US pair playing the part of pantomime villains as the set sat on a knifedge at five games all.

Team Europe faced an incredible six break points in the next game but incredibly held, before Sock and Tiafoe dug in to force a tiebreak.

As the clock ticked past midnight, the American pair showed real class to tie up the sets after a 7-2 tiebreak win for Team World. That meant a 10-point decider in the Laver Cup format.

Federer and Nadal went three up amidst huge noise, but Team World won four straight points as the tension ratcheted up. Back and forth the two teams went, the score going to 9-9.

Team USA spoiled the party with the final two points to earn a 2-1 set win, but the night belonged to Federer as he soaked up the adulation of the London crowd who paid tribute to one of the greatest players to ever play the sport.

All that was left was the player to salute them as the 41-year-old brought his career to an end with the tears flowing freely from the player himself and some of his European team-mates.
