Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from Wimbledon but says she will play in the upcoming Olympic Games.

"She is taking some personal time with friends and family. She will be ready for the Olympics and is excited to play in front of her home fans," it was confirmed by a spokesperson this evening, in a statement delivered to Sport Illustrated's Jon Wertheim.

The 23-year-old Osaka - the reigning Australian and US Open winner - withdrew from the French Open midway through following a controversy over her decision not to speak to the media or participate in press conferences.

Osaka withdrew in Paris a couple of days after winning her first round match, saying it was best for her "well-being".
