Andy Murray's long winning streak has ended with defeat by Marin Cilic in the final of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.
The 6-4 7-5 loss brought to an end a 22-game run - the longest undefeated stretch of the Scot's career - and was Murray's first reverse since the French Open final in June.
Cilic claimed the title beating the top seed and two-time Cincinnati champion after one hour and 34 minutes.
Just a week after retaining his Olympic title in Rio, Murray lost his serve twice in the first set and, despite breaking back, fell behind.
The second set was a much tighter affair but the Wimbledon champion was broken again by Cilic at 5-5 after saving four break points.
Cilic managed to hold his nerve and serve out the match for only his third win in 14 attempts against Murray, who will now turn his attention to looking to repeat his 2012 US Open success when this year's competition gets under way on 29 August.
Meanwhile, Angelique Kerber (pictured) missed the chance to end Serena Williams' long reign as world No.1 after suffering a surprise straight-sets defeat by Karolina Pliskova in the final of the Western & Southern Open.
A victory in Cincinnati would have seen Kerber climb to the top of the WTA world rankings, replacing Williams who has held that spot for 183 successive weeks.
However, despite winning four of her previous six meetings with Pliskova, the 28-year-old German could not see off the challenge of the Czech 15th seed, who claimed a 6-3 6-1 win.
Pliskova, 24, paid tribute to Kerber after clinching her sixth WTA singles title: "Angie's had an amazing week and has done a great job all year.
"I know she was playing for the world No.1, so I think you deserve to be No.1, but maybe next time."
