Rain forces early finish to play at Wimbledon

Heavy rainfall hit Wimbledon on the second day of the championships, with play on all but Centre Court called off at 6.20pm.

The skies opened at 4.30pm, just after Andy Murray had finished his first-round clash on Centre Court with Liam Broady, and the conditions did not improve.

After a two-hour wait, tournament organisers called off play for the day on all courts barring Centre.

The roof was closed on the main show court after Murray's win, meaning Svetlana Kuznetsova was able to see off Caroline Wozniacki, while Coco Vandeweghe's clash with Kateryna Bondarenko was switched to Centre.

As a consequence of the rain, the likes of Johanna Konta and Bernard Tomic have first-round games to complete, while Heather Watson's match with Annika Beck did not even start.

Konta led Monica Puig by a set, while Australian Tomic was locked at two sets all with Fernando Verdasco.

Others with results pending included the likes of eighth seed Dominic Thiem - three games in against Florian Meyer - and Tomas Berdych, potentially two games away from beating Ivan Dodig.

Fourteen games were in progress at the time of the abandonment, with several others slated to start after them, giving organisers a first real headache as they pieced together Wednesday's order of play.
