Lleyton Hewitt could return to the court weeks after his retirement after being drafted into Australia's Davis Cup squad.
The 35-year-old Australia captain, who ending his playing career following the Australian Open in January, has replaced the unwell Nick Kyrgios in the team named to face the United States.
Hewitt is not planning to play a rubber, with Sam Groth and Bernard Tomic scheduled for the singles and Groth and John Peers slated for Saturday's doubles, but the two-time Grand Slam winner is ready to step in if required.
He told Tennis Australia: "We'll just see how it pans out. We've got to put our best options forward every single day and we will have a look at it after each day's play and see how Sam plays and pulls up after his singles."
US team captain Jim Courier said: "We've seen how much Lleyton was practising this week and with Nick's pretty conspicuous absence but it's certainly not something coming down here that we were anticipating."
