South Africa have taken a 2-0 lead against Ireland in their Davis Cup Europe/Africa  Group II relegation clash at the Irene County Club in Centurion.

James McGee lost Ireland's first match to Fritz Wolmarans 7-6 1-6 6-3 6-3 to give the Africans victory in the first rubber.

Sam Barry was beaten by Tucker Vorster 6-1 6-7 7-6 6-4 to make it a double victory day for the host nation.

Next up on day two is the doubles match between Ireland's James Cluskey and David O'Hare and South Africa's Dean O'Brien and Ruan Roelofse. Day three sees McGee face Vorster and Barry face Wolmarans in the singles.

If Ireland lose the tie they will drop to the third tier of Davis Cup tennis.
