Ireland 2-3 Luxembourg (Best of 5 rubbers)

Ireland have lost their Davis Cup tie with Luxembourg after Conor Niland was beaten in straight set by Gilles Muller at Riverview.

Niland went down in 6-4, 6-4 6-4 against the talented Muller.

In the final dead singles match, James McGee beat Mike Vermeer 6-1 6-2.

Luxembourg will play Great Britain in the next round, while Ireland face a tough trip to Tunisia.

Niland has threatened to cause an upset in the opening set, breaking his opponent and taking a 4-1 lead.

But Muller fought back and reeled off five games in succession to take the advantage.

The final two sets were also close as Niland fought in vain to rescue the tie.

Muller held too much class and the writing was on the wall when he broke in the first game of the third set.

Muller held his own serve for the remainder of the match to secure the straight sets win.
