Despite taking a two-set lead, Ireland's Conor Niland has been defeated by the Ukraine's Segiy Stakhovsky in their Davis Cup clash.

The defeat means that Ireland cannot now win the series.

In a gruelling, five-set, four-hour match, Niland lost 4-6 4-6 6-4 7-6 7-5. It was a heartbreaking loss for Niland, as he was a break of serve up in the fourth and fifth sets against a player ranked 183 places ahead of him.

Ukraine have now won the Davis Cup tie 3-1.
