Lindsay Davenport has withdrawn from her second round match at Wimbledon due to a nagging right knee injury.

The 25th seed battled to a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 triumph in her opening-round encounter with Renata Voracova on Tuesday, but was clearly hindered by the injury, which was heavily taped during the match.

Davenport, Wimbledon champion in 1999, was scheduled to play Argentina's Gisela Dulko.

The 32-year-old seemed remarkably upbeat despite having to pull out.

Davenport had been sidelined for eight months following a knee operation in 2002, and was simply relieved there is no threat of surgery this time.

‘After my match a couple of days ago, I went to the hospital and did an MRI,’ the American explained.

‘It came out looking good but just showed I had some inflammation and fluid behind the knee cap.

‘I rested all day yesterday, had treatment and wanted to see how I would do today in the warm-up. But I was only about 20 or 30% and it's not going to get better so I was prescribed rest.

‘I toyed with the idea of going on court as it didn't hurt to serve, but in the second round I wanted to be 100% and feel like I had a chance and my knee wasn't ready to play.

‘It doesn't require surgery, the doctors are confident it's only an inflammation, but this is the way it goes.’

Davenport added that she is determined to be fit in time for the Olympics and the US Open.
