South African qualifier Kevin Anderson produced a stunning second round upset to dump defending champion Novak Djokovic out of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.

The third-seeded Serbian entered the tournament in good form having won the Pacific Life Open last week, but he was sent crashing out 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 6-4 by world number 122 Anderson.

Anderson fired six aces en route to the biggest win of his career.

'It was our first meeting, and I never saw him playing before,' said Djokovic, who became the youngest winner in the 23-year history of the event when he defeated Argentina's Guillermo Canas last year.

'He surprised me with the way he was serving. I wasn't moving on my returns good enough, and obviously that resulted in easy service games.'

Anderson converted a pair of key breaks in the third set and overcame five double faults, including one on double match point.

'I really don't know even what to say right now,' said Anderson, who reached his first ATP final in Las Vegas earlier this month.

'I really tried to give myself the best shot. I kept telling myself I can do this. I've just got to believe in myself, play my game.

'But even still, just knowing what he's done and what a great player he is, and to have actually beaten him, it's a tremendous experience for me.'

Second seeded Rafael Nadal claimed his place in the third round by defeating German qualifier Benjamin Becker 7-5 6-2.

Ninth-seed James Blake also advanced with a 7-5 6-3 win over Andreas Seppi of Italy but seventh seed David Nalbandian and eighth seed Richard Gasquet of France were not as fortunate.

Xavier Malisse broke Nalbandian three times en route to a 6-1 6-4 win over the Argentinian, while Gasquet crashed out 6-3 6-7 (2/7) 7-6 (7/5) to unseeded Russian Dmitry Tursunov.

Serena Williams began her defence of the women's event with a dominant straight-sets win over Edina Gallovits on Friday.

The eighth-seeded American needed only 54 minutes to dispatch the unseeded Romanian 6-1 6-2.

World number one Justine Henin strolled through to the third round with a 6-4 6-2 win over Angelique Kerber of Germany.

Second seed Svetlana Kuznetsova needed three sets to down Chinese Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan 6-1 3-6 6-0, while sixth seed Venus Williams defeated Poland's Marta Domachowska 6-4 6-3.
