Sorensen provides Irish cheer in Dublin

Irish number one Louk Sorensen secured a memorable opening day victory at the Shelbourne Irish Open at Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club on Monday.

Sorenson beat number six seed Nicolas Tourte from France 6-3 7/6.

The 336-ranked Sorensen - playing against a player ranked 103 places higher on the ATP list - served well throughout and hit several big winners in each set off his powerful forehand.

He will now meet American Brendan Evans who earlier defeated John McGahon from Dundalk 6-3 6-2.

James Clusky gave a good account of himself before going down 7-6 6-4 to Ti Chen from Chinese Taipei.

Elsewhere, defending champion Mischa Zverev was extended to two tie breaks by the Latvian Andis Juska. The German prevailed 7-6 7-6.
