Top seed Andy Roddick advanced to the last four of the SAP Open on Saturday to set up a repeat semi-final clash with defending champion Andy Murray.

Roddick withstood a strong challenge from eighth seed Vincent Spadea before recording a 6-3 6-7 (5/7) 6-1 triumph over his fellow American in the quarter-finals of the hardcourt event.

Seeded third, Murray rallied for a 4-6 6-3 7-6 (7/4) victory over number seven seed Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea to secure a meeting with Roddick in what is a repeat of last year's semi-final encounter.

Seeking his third crown here after winning in 2004 and 2005, Roddick still secured a berth in the last four despite dropping his first set of the tournament.

After breaking Spadea in the sixth game en route to an opening-set win, Roddick was in control in the second set before being broken for the first time in the tournament in the eighth game.

Spadea then took a 5-0 lead in the tie-break, but Roddick rallied to pull within 5-6 before hitting a backhand wide.

Sixth-seeded German Benjamin Becker also earned a place in the last four with a 6-4 6-3 triumph over number four seed Marat Safin of Russia.

Becker will take on unseeded Croatian Ivo Karlovic, who posted his second successive upset of an American when he beat fifth-seeded Mardy Fish 7-6 (7/2) 6-4.

On Thursday, Karlovic had ended the challenge of second seed James Blake.
