Fernando Gonzalez booked his place in the quarter final of the Australian Open with a resounding 7-5 6-4 7-6 (7-4) straight sets victory over fifth seed James Blake.

Gonzalez will face the winner of the Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal match.

The pair shared early breaks in the first set and then both wasted three break points in consecutive games as the opening exchanges remained deadlocked.

But Blake was left to run his mistake at 5-4 as the 10th seed reeled off two straight games to clinch the first set.

Gonzalez let two match points slip at 5-3 on Blake's serve in the third as the American fought back to force a tie-break, but the Chilean was not to be denied as he wrapped up the victory, converting the second of two match points.

Germany's Tommy Haas also secured his place in the last eight with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory over comeback king David Nalbandian to set-up a quarter final clash with either Tomas Berdych or Nikolay Davydenko.

Nalbandian, the eighth seed, had fought back from two sets behind to beat Sebastien Grosjean in the third round and looked to have turned the corner after taking the first set in 44 minutes.

But the 12th seed responded and powered through three sets in an hour and 45 minutes to reach the last eight.
