Martina Hingis was the most high-profile casualty in the first round of the ATP & WTA Medibank International in Sydney.
The Swiss former world number one, the fifth seed in Australia, went down 6-4 4-6 6-3 to Serbia's Jelena Jankovic.
The only other seed to exit the tournament was in the men's draw, where eighth-seeded Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean lost 6-4 6-4 to Spain's Fernando Verdasco.
Number four seed Marcos Baghdatis enjoyed a 7-6 (7/3) 6-1 victory over Latvia's Ernest Gulbis in what was the Cypriot's first match Down Under since his memorable run to the 2006 Australian Open, during which he knocked out, among others, Andy Roddick and David Nalbandian.
Fifth seed Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic is also through to the second round following a 6-2 7-5 win over home favourite Robert Smeets.
