Singles wins by Tommy Robredo and Anabel Medina Garrigues on Thursday allowed Spain to defeat previously unbeaten India and join Russia in the final of the Hopman Cup.

Heading into Thursday's action, Spain, India and Czech Republic all had an opportunity to win Group B and advance to the final of the international dual-gender team event.

After Robredo, a top claycourt player, cruised past unheralded Rohan Bopanna, 6-2 6-3, the Spaniards (2-1) clinched the berth when Medina Garrigues rallied past Sania Mirza, 3-6 6-1 6-3.

Bopanna and Mirza prevented a sweep for India (2-1) with a three-set win in the meaningless mixed doubles match.

The path was paved for Spain when Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic (1-2) was beaten by Croatia's Mario Ancic, 7-6 (7/2) 6-4. The Czechs needed to sweep all three matches in the tie to have a chance to advance.

The Spaniards will face Russia (2-1), who clinched Group A with Wednesday's 3-0 dusting of France. Dmitry Tursunov and Nadia Petrova won singles matches before teaming up for a doubles triumph over Jerome Haehnel and Tatiana Golovin.

The tournament was already guaranteed a new champion when the United States lost their first two ties and were eliminated from contention.

The Americans (0-3) finished as the only winless team in the event, claiming just three of nine overall matches.

Australian mainstay Mark Philippoussis suffered a hyperextended knee on Tuesday and is doubtful for the upcoming Australian Open.
