Nikolai Davydenko stands in the way of Andy Murray's progress to his first grand slam quarter-final after the Scottish rising star made it through to the last 16 of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

The number 17 seed set up a last 16 clash with the seventh seeded Russian after ousting fiery Chilean Fernando Gonzalez in a dramatic five-setter last night.

Murray needed all his resolve to fight back from two sets to one down against the brutal hitting Gonzalez as the Scot wrapped up a 6-3 3-6 3-6 6-3 6-2 win.

On paper, Davydenko represents yet another step up in class for the teenage sensation, who is looking to cause the latest upset of his short career.

'He's one of the most consistent players on tour,' Murray said. 'He's done really well in all the grand slams the last couple of years.

'He's won a lot of matches - I think he's played the most matches on tour this year.

'He's someone I lost against earlier this year but I feel like I'm playing better now than I was then.

'I'm going to have to play well if I want to win, but it's a pretty tough task.'
