Ninth seed Andy Roddick became the first player to reach the third round of the US Open with a 6-3 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 win on his 24th birthday over qualifier Kristian Pless of Denmark.
Last August 30, Roddick was stunned in the first round by Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, but he had a much more successful birthday this year, firing 21 aces and saving the two break points he faced.
'It's kind of lost on me during this tournament, to be honest,'
Roddick said of his birthday. 'If I had the choice, I'd probably chose to move it back a couple of weeks.'
