Greg Rusedski set up a potential third-round showdown with Andy Roddick by beating Italian Stefano Galvani in the Rome Masters.
The new British number one saw off Galvani 7-6 6-4 at the Foro Italico having beaten Tommy Robredo in the first round on Monday.
And Rusedski impressed again on the clay with four successful breaks of serve to ease past the outclassed home favourite from Padova.
Roddick meets Marcos Baghdatis for a place in the next round.
