Roger Federer signalled his title aspirations with a 6-2 6-3 6-2 demolition of Denis Istomin in the opening round of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

The top seed advanced to the second round by finishing his Uzbekistan opponent off in less than 90 minutes.

Federer soon took the upper hand when he broke Istomin's second service game and the Swiss ace broke again to win the first set 6-2.

The second set started in similar fashion with Federer soon making the important break.

But with Federer leading 5-1 and serving for the set, Istomin stunned the world number one by breaking back after three unforced errors by the top seed.

However, Federer soon found his touch again, serving to take the second set 6-3 with his next service game.

The third set began in similar fashion to the first two with the tournament favourite breaking his opponent's opening service game.

And Federer soon broke Istomin's serve again before running away with the final set 6-2.

British hope Murray fell 6-1 6-3 6-3 to Argentinian Juan Ignacio Chela.

Third seed Lleyton Hewitt advanced to the second round after a hard-fought  6-4 2-6 5-7 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 marathon victory over Robin Vik of the Czech Republic.

Hewitt produced a mixed performance as he overcame nine breaks of service and 13 double faults to take the match in five intense sets.

For Vik it was a match of missed opportunity as the inexperienced Czech had his serve broken while serving for the match.

The win for Hewitt, after nearly four hours, sets up a second-round clash with Murray's conqueror Chela.

Slovakian 12th seed Dominik Hrbaty trailed by two sets before fighting back to overcome Austrian Oliver Marach 3-6 4-6 6-2 6-1 6-3.

And Argentina's Guillermo Coria was another seed made to work hard for his victory, the world number nine eventually toppling Romanian Victor Hanescu 6-4 1-6 4-6 6-2 6-1 to move through to the second round.

Fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko was severely tested by Croatian Ivo Karlovic, edging home 7-5 4-6 3-6 7-5 6-3.
