Andre Agassi was swept aside 6-4 6-2 by Russian Nikolay Davydenko at the season-ending Masters Cup today.

The former world number one was completely outplayed in Shanghai in his first match since losing to Roger Federer in the US Open final two months ago.

Davydenko secured a double break in the second set with a backhand pass to go 5-2 up and raced through the final game to love when a frustrated Agassi struck a forehand into the net.

The 35-year-old Agassi, winner of the Masters title in 1990, appeared to be struggling with his right shoulder and had little answer to Davydenko's power in a one-sided match.

Meanwhile, Spanish star Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the event with a foot injury.

The announcement was made as the second seed was due to take to the court for his opening match. Nadal, who has been out since last month's Madrid Masters with knee trouble, was due to play Argentinian Gaston Gaudio. He will be replaced by Mariano Puerta, also from Argentina.

Nadal, 19, joins a long list of withdrawals from the Masters Cup. Marat Safin and Andy Roddick pulled out with injury problems while Lleyton Hewitt is bypassing the tournament to be with his pregnant wife.
