Top two seeds Lindsay Davenport and Maria Sharapova have pulled out of the WTA Advanta Championships in Philadelphia.

The world number one Davenport was diagnosed with the flu, while Russian Sharapova recently suffered a right thumb sprain during off-court training.

"I am very disappointed that I am unable to play the Advanta Championships this week," stated US star Davenport.

"I am looking forward to getting healthy and defending my year-end number one ranking at the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships in Los Angeles next week."

Both Davenport and Sharapova had received first-round byes.

Davenport was to have faced Slovakian Martina Sucha while Sharapova was to have met either American Lisa Raymond or Australian Samantha Stosur.
