Third seed Amelie Mauresmo of France extended her winning streak over 19th-seeded Russian Elena Likhovtseva to seven matches with a 6-1 6-4 triumph in the US Open Championships to reach her third Grand Slam quarter-final of the year.

Mauresmo now faces 12th seed Mary Pierce, who stunned the red-hot Justine Henin-Hardenne 6-3 6-4.

Pierce jumped ahead at 5-0 in the first set before holding on and was far more effective than the erratic Henin-Hardenne, avenging her loss in the French Open final three months ago and defeating the 2003 US Open champion for the first time in five tries.

Henin-Hardenne made 19 unforced errors, including a surprising 10 double-faults.
